A degree in games
Explore game degree opportunities
The GAME School in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts offers different pathways into the games industry in both Arizona and downtown Los Angeles. Explore our options below to find the program that works best for you and your goals.
Downtown Los Angeles
Studying the new BS in game studio production program at the ASU California Center drops you into the heart of downtown Los Angeles, inside one of the densest ecosystems of game studios, film productions, animation houses and digital media companies anywhere in the world. The convergence of all those industries is something you feel every day. You’ll get one-on-one mentorship from faculty members and build collaborative relationships with your peers. You’ll be part of a close-knit creative community that includes students studying games, film, narrative and emerging media, and fashion.
Graduate prepared to run your own indie game studio or take on leadership roles in established studios. Step into roles that bring together creative leadership and business acumen, from independent studio founder and producer to game director and project manager. The skills built in this program travel beyond the studios, opening doors in the film and entertainment industry, interactive media, education technology and any field that needs people who can drive complex creative projects from concept to launch. You’ll have the kind of versatile, game-on energy the industry demands.

Tempe and Mesa
In Arizona, The GAME School is at the Tempe campus and the nearby ASU Media and Immersive eXperience Center in Mesa. Students live in the brand new design and arts dorms on the Tempe campus. At the MIX Center, the vibe is collaborative and wide open. Students work alongside designers, artists, engineers, filmmakers, scientists and musicians in a creative ecosystem that crosses disciplines. Resources, access and connections between fields are built into the daily experience. This is the kind of environment where you come in thinking you want to make one kind of game and leave with a far more powerful vision of what games can do to transform the ways we learn, work and connect.
Game design graduates move across the artistic, technical and leadership dimensions of the industry, stepping into roles as level designers building immersive worlds, UX designers shaping how players actually feel inside a game or producers managing the teams and timelines that bring it all together. The mix of creative vision, technical fluency and project management skills that the program builds does not stop at the studio door either. Graduates take those skills and creative energy into film, animation, health, education, technology and beyond, as software developers, web designers, IT managers, animators and creative directors.
